The K-9 Division

What is the k-9 division about?

As a k-9 officer ( or a dog handler )

you are supporting the patrol division.

A police dog is a great addition to the force,

they are able to smell drugs, weapons and explosives.

Some dogs of the Chicago police department are also

trained in searching humans ( missing persons )

So is it all about support? No.

The k-9 divisions are running call outs themselves as well

They have the option to break and roll ( drop the call and drive to the place where they are requested.

What calls can the K-9 officer respond to?

Domestic disturbance

Fight in progress ( F.I.P )

Assault

Person with a knife

Manual backup request of a patrol officers / EMS

Missing person

Confirmed warrant

And much more,

as you can read, the k-9 officers aren't sitting still.

They have a huge impact on the community as they provide

a safety field in the area they are located.

Usually per shift there are 3 k-9 handlers active.
